Erythrina crista-galli
Fireman's Helmet

Firemans Helmet Erythrina crista-galliA question from Emily's mailbox:

Q: For over 50 years I have known this plant to be a Fireman's Helmet.  What is it commonly called & what is the scientific name?

My cutting came from my parents, who got their start from the grounds of an old hospital in Conroe, TX.  I planted mine some 30 years ago. This shows only about 1/4 of the plant.  I  saw two in  San Antonio once with trunks over 12" across.

A: This is "Erythrina crista-galli" also known as Fireman's Helmet, Fireman's Cap Tree, Cry Baby, Brazilian Coral.

Here is the wikipedia site for the plant. You can put the Latin name into Google to find out more.
