Sempervivum tectorum
Hens and Chicks
CRASSULACEAE

Hens and ChicksSometimes called the Roof Houseleek, this favorite is from the mountains of southern Europe around the Mediterranean. In zones 4 - 8 they grow mainly outdoors on walls, roofs, crevices and stone gardens.

They grow rosettes of up to four inches in low mats along the ground. The rosettes make runners that easily divide themselves.

Many hybrid varieties of this succulent perennial are available with fleshy rosettes of green, or bluish, or reddish hues.

Grow in poor to fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Not much water and less in winter.

Propagate by using the root offsets in spring or summer.
